Sculpins become a big food source for the trout in the rivers
once the trout reach a certain length, be it 16-20 inches depending on the
river.
They are plentiful in alot of the rivers we fish along with baitfish,
leeches, crayfish etc. Sculpin pattern are the big fish killers. They can be
thrown in all types of waters using different methods for different types of
fish. Bass love them, pike destroy them, rainbows, brown, and even salmon
can't get enoughof them. The patterns I tie use alot of rabbit strips and
barred rabbit strips for more movement combined with the deer hair to give
the profile 0f the sculpins flat head a the pec fins sticking out on the
sides. The conehead sculpin patterns can be used with a strip retrieve or an
up and down motion. The articulated sculpins are done with a connection
similar to a jointed rapala to imitate the side to side motion combined with
the deerhair head and the rabbit strip body you have a big fish killer
fly.The twin tail patterns can imitate a sculpin or a crayfish so it does
double duty. It is a great smallmouth bass fly and it works on the steelhead
just as good.
The egg steelers are a different look to the egg sucking
leech. I like to use a soft gell egg for realism. Once the fish clamps down
and feels the egg they rarely let go. This spring I was fishing the Oak
orchard river for steelhead and I was using a pink egg steeler and caught a
huge sucker legally. If it can catch a sucker imagine what it will do to the
browns and rainbows. These flies will catch fish but they will also bring up
some of the biggest fish in the rivers you go to.They are looking for a big
meal while using very little effort to get it so why not show them what they
want.
Don't be surprised if it is a fish of a
lifetime. Good fishing and good luck.
